The very first alien

Watching ET tonight and it brings back a couple of childhood memories:

  • My grandmother taking me to see the movie at the theatre when I was a little girl. I was visiting her over the summer holiday and I have clear memories of seeing this movie with her.

  • My dad’s vist to America on a business trip. He bought back gifts for the three of us – a Speak and Spell for my brother (there’s one in the movie which brings back the memory), a Speak and Math for me and a Cabage Patch rip off doll for my youngest brother who must have been about five at the time. I remember it had little fabric testicles sewn on. I guess that’s the biggest thing that distinguished it from the real thing. Ironically the Speak n Spell has recently re-entered  my life through multiple viewings of Toy Story.

I forgot how funny this movie is in parts – and how tragic. Really enjoying this little trip down memory lane.

Flashback

We have a LOT of painting to do in our newly renovated house. I am in charge of the trim while Kei is tackling the walls. Of course, you can’t paint without music so I managed to find my seriously underused ipod and plugged in in to enjoy some tunes. The best thing about not listening to your ipod in a really long time is that you discover all sorts of great songs that you forgot you owned.

This one is an old song from a band called Blind Melon – a band that sadly can play no more thanks to a drug overdose that ended the life of the very talented lead singer. Such a waste.

You probably remember the first song and the video that starred a little girl dancing in a bumble bee constume. The second song is my favourite by the band.

Interesting Fact: This Blind Melon album is the only duplicate that Kei and I had when we got married and combined our record collection. We have since come to appreciate each others’ musical tastes a little more (although I still don’t understand the Beastie Boys). He was all about rock, soul and eclectic music while I’m a pop girl. Seriously – it’s a wonder we ever got together in the first place.

Enjoy this little 90s flashback.

Real Love

I am lacking some really goood new music lately. Here are a couple of new (well new to me) songs that I am enjoying. I have a $15 gift certificate to itunes that I have had since Xmas. Maybe I’ll finally splurge and use it to actually purchase these songs.

Why do I put so much more thought into how I spend Gift certficates than I do when I use my own money…? Anyone else have this problem?

So enjoy this special Musical Thursday.

Happy Thursday.

Trying something new

I am trying out a new Photoblog template. It changes the background colours based on the colours in your photos. I thought I might just post my P365 photos over there so I have a record of each day. The archive feature just shows the pics which is very cool.

I imported all my P365 posts to see what they look like and some of them look great like this one and this one and this one and this one. Apparently black and white photos get a grey or black background which is a little blah!

Not sure if I’ll keep it up since I often think the story is just as important as the photo but it might be a good way to collate all of my P365 posts in one place. Or maybe Flickr is more than enough and I am just making more work for myself…

A current fave

Enjoying this song right now.

Baby update: Had my doctor’s appointment this morning and told him that I had been having contractions but they go away when I lie down for a while. He said that’s agood thing if I want to hold off this pregnancy but not if I want the baby to come soon. So I guess I have a little while to go yet and, with any luck, the kid will not upset the house construction timeline.

I now remember having these contractions with Thomas but I didn’t know what they were at the time. They started about a week before I had him so I will begin cleaning out my desk next week and starting a handover document just in case. I am starting to get a little tired of work and ready to leave now. Motivation is low at the moment, especially when my feet start to get swollen from sitting at a desk all day. Just two more weeks…

I’m making a list…

I frequent a blog called Cool Mum Picks and I really should stop looking. There is just too much fun stuff that I want. Not NEED – Just WANT. (Don’t worry Kei – I am just window shopping right now). I keep telling myself that I am just trying to fill the gaping hole left by the lack of frilly, pink, girly things in my life. 🙂

Fun T-Shirts and onesies from a company called Green with Whimsy who specialize in eco-friendly clothing with a fun message. I especially love these two designs. Perfect for Boys.

I could also see Thomas wearing this

And love the idea of getting one of these for each of them with their names in the ABC to hang in the playroom.

Oh, and how sweet is this?

I did fill part of the hole by buying some new baby stuff for Mummy on Sunday. My old diaper bag is looking very shabby thanks to about two years of continuous daily use so on Sunday I headed alllll the way over to SE Portland (seriously about 10 minutes) to peruse the special sale at Queen Bea Creations, makers of the fabulous Chickpea Diaper bags. All bags are handmade out of soft vinyl that looks like leather. See – my purchases are helping to save the planet! OK, that was a stretch.

I picked up this little gem for about $20 off – still expensive but hey, I don’t have to buy any baby clothes. 🙂 Mine is green, not turquoise. Thomas helped me pick it out – while I was trying to prevent him from being trampled by bargain shoppers.

It came with one of these little changing pads for free. (gotta love free!)

I also bought a small tote bag – just for me. Not Mummy related in any way. Mine is actually brown with little pink flowers like cherry blossoms. VERY girly thank you!

I just love looking at fun baby stuff. Wish I had the money to buy it all but I’ll settle for a new second floor on our house. Construction starts tomorrow and I am a little nervous but very excited. I’ll send pics of the demolition phase. Should be quite a spectacle.

Refresher Course

I’m not sure how much I remember about the newborn stage. I’m sure it will all come back to me when the new baby comes but, for now, check out this great (funny) refresher course. (Thanks Dooce)

Although hosing the baby down is sometimes necessary… )

Welcome!

Welcome to my brand new location. I have been using WordPress for our family blog and thought it was time to simplify. Maybe I should have chosen that as my word for 2008? Hmmmm.

Expect to see some changes to this blog design as I get used to my new diggs. I mean you have to try things out, see how it feels before you redecorate, right?

And for my very first post at my new locale, a very funny video clip a friend sent to me today. Working Mums (and Dads), anyone with kids and well… anyone who’s married will understand. I really have to add these guys to my Netflix.

Thanks for stopping by

Nicole
