Toddler Pot Luck

It began about three years ago with six babies and six sets of new parents who decided to get together for a pot luck. It may have been the shared experiences that we mothers discussed at the baby and me group, it may have been the need for somewhere to go every couple of months without spending huge amounts on babysitting. Whatever the motivation, we have maintained this regular get-together over the years and it continues with the newest additions to the group – 4 baby siblings born in the past 18 months.

Behind the fun and laughter however, the Ishidas were guilty of one shameful fact. We were yet to host a pot luck dinner. I could spout off excuses – house renovations, travel to Australia, baby #2 – but there was really no excuse – we simply had not been pulling our weight.

So in April we put aside our embarrassment over half painted renovations, bare wood trim and missing kitchen baseboards, and invited all six families over for the Ishida Toddler pot luck. That’s 12 adults and 10 children in our 1000 square foot ground floor.

Of course it spilled outside to the sidewalk (our backyard is another source of shame).

But the enchiladas were a hit and the kids fell in love with Thomas’ bunk bed (of course I later read the warning that recommended only one child on top at a time… woops).

And all in all, the evening was a great success.

Samuel even made a new friend.

I’m not sure why we waited so long.

Jenny Sizzler – March 6th, 2009

One Friday night a month is Jenny Sizzler night. Good music (starring a fellow daycare parent and neighbour on the fiddle), good pizza and lots of crazy kids in a daycare mosh pit. Oh, AND there’s a disco ball. What’s not to love?

ZOO – FEBRUARY 21ST, 2009

The Zoo is a regular family excursion for the Ishidas. Generally we wait for the first day where the temperature is bearable and it’s not raining and we take the opportunity. This time we shook things up a little and walked in the reverse direction of our normal path. I know – we live on the edge.

We got up close and personal with this guy.

It’s a giraffe.

We were also able to see this little guy again. So cute!

And Thomas and Kei enjoyed a little bonding time.

BOYS TOYS – FEBRUARY 3RD 2009

Now that Thomas is three he has started becoming a real boy. As much as I have tried to (gently) discourage it, he is into wrestling and fighting and pirates and anything requiring loud noises. Buzz and Woody are in a perpetual war with Zurg (you’ll have to look that one up) and poor Slinky Dog is going to be stretched beyond recognition if he continues to act as a bungy cord. And thanks to a new interest in matchbox cars, I get a nervous tic every time I hear the sound of metal on hardwood floors.

I dream of dolls and pretty pink, soft things that are quiet and dainty.

I’m learning to deal with it.

Coraline

I am so excited to see this movie – but who am I kidding? I’ll likely watch it on DVD just to save on babysitting. I mean who wants to pay $70 just to see a movie after movie ticket prices and babysitting rates.

Nevertheless, I am excited about this movie. Apparently parts of it were made right here in Oregon (yay Oregon!). It just looks so creative and interesting and just a little bit creepy.

Oh, and I wasted about 30 minutes on the website last night so now I am invested. Check it out – very cool.

Have a Merry Christmas or if you don’t celebrate – just have a great day anyway.

Right Now…

Proud of this

I can actually share something I helped create while doing my day job. Months and months of work finally came to fruition. This is only a peek – the full internal version of the film was 15 minutes long. (I tried to share before but the links weren’t working for some reason. I also added a second link).

Loving This

And This

She makes me feel like I am transported back in time. I seem to have a thing for British artists.

Wish I could afford this…

Unsure about this…

My new blog look. Hmmm. Maybe I need a new picture at the top. It looks like I’m advertising a night club.

Sharing…

I came across a few things in digi land today that I think are just fab. Have to share:

  • Jessica Sprague shared information about a fabulous new tool called vi.sualize.us where you can save links of your favourite visual inspiration from the internet. It’s like Flickr, but for the entire web. You’ll see a new link to my own account under my links over there on the right.
  • Jen Wilson has just released her new digi line of products called JWD Academy and, as always, there are a bunch of very inspiring challenges on offer. Make sure you download the handbook. That’s inspiring on its own.
  • KSharonK has a free mini kit on her blog today that will be just perfect for scrapping some of my Aussie photos.

  • Lauren Reid released a fabulous kit while I was away. It’s called Sundown and, again, perfect for my Aussie pics. Now if I can just find some time to scrap. Here are the papers and you can buy a bunch of addons including some cute doodles and an alpha. Link to Lauren’s store.

  • And I just saw that Little Dreamer is having a 40% off sale on the 15th. Perfect!

Did I mention I’ll be back at work next week? Ugh! Best find some time to scrap now…

Counting to four. Over and over and over…

Thomas requested we look up this song on You Tube after seeing it listed in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly. He was reading the magazine while sitting on the potty (we’re slowly working on the potty training, although not with much success so far). OK – maybe he wasn’t reading the magazine exactly. I think the picture of Elmo drew him in.

I have had this song in my head for three days now. The Sesame Street version. I blame the chickens just back from the shore.
